There are free health screenings, food and child care assistance resources, caregiver support groups and employment resources, along with representatives from city services like the fire department and the public libraries. Just about anything falling under the community resources umbrella is represented. “We’re kind of experts at navigating and helping patients find cheaper alternatives to something their plan may or may not cover … We’re able to deliver very patient-centered, real-time care,” Amy Schultz, Chesapeake Regional’s director of pharmacy, said. The program, held quarterly at rotating locations, draws more than 40 community groups to provide resources, expertise and support. The pharmacy, located in Bainbridge Marketplace shopping center, plays a central role when Chesapeake Regional hosts its Wellness Wednesdays program in the parking lot. The nomination notes that Chesapeake Rx has become a Chesapeake Regional health services hub in South Norfolk: “It’s a central meeting location for events that help solve disparities related to race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geographic location, disability, and/or sexual orientation.” Since 2021, the pharmacy has given more than 6,000 COVID vaccinations and nearly 1,000 people have used the site to receive other vaccines. The timing was fortuitous as the coronavirus pandemic hit soon after and the new pharmacy allowed residents to stay close to home to fill prescriptions and get the vaccines when they became available. Chesapeake Rx committed to being a “neighborhood pharmacy,” providing all the same items and services as major competitors but with hometown service. The area had not had a pharmacy in the vicinity for nearly 25 years. It opened Chesapeake Rx on Bainbridge Boulevard in January 2020. When the South Norfolk Civic League approached Chesapeake Regional Healthcare about building a pharmacy in the area, the health system delivered.
